Ragn-Sells' innovation company EasyMining secures grant for groundbreaking phosphorus recovery plant
PGS (Phosphorgewinnung Schkopau), a joint venture between Ragn-Sells' innovation company EasyMining and Gelsenwasser, a German utilities company, has been awarded a grant of EUR 27.1 million from the Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of the Environment on 13 February 2025. The grant is funded by the European Commission’s Just Transition Fund.
This funding will support the construction of the world’s first phosphorus recovery plant utilising EasyMining’s Ash2Phos process, set to launch in 2027. This project will ensure a stable, large-scale supply of high-quality phosphorus and position Saxony-Anhalt at the forefront of innovative recycling and waste management technologies.
“If we are serious about creating a sustainable society, we must reuse the resources we already have, over and over again. This funding is a significant milestone securing critical agricultural phosphorus and enhancing environmental protection," says Anders Kihl, Head of Strategy and R&D at Ragn-Sells.
The funding decision reflects a commitment to future technologies, recognising phosphorus as a critical raw material. Countries like Germany that import thousands of tonnes annually will greatly benefit from this circular economy solution that could also contribute to a reduced import dependency.
“With this project we want to establish a closed-loop solution for phosphorous in Europe that will ensure a stable, high-quality supply of this vital nutrient and contribute to a more sustainable food supply.” says Christian Kabbe, Managing Director of EasyMining Germany GmbH.
