From 28-30 September, the UNFCCC held the eighth global dialogue and investment-focused event under the Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Ambition and Implementation Work Programme in Sydney, Australia. As part of the international climate solutions exhibition, the Climate Solutions Framework showcased four scalable circular solutions from Ragn-Sells as concrete examples of climate action.

The exhibition as a whole highlighted initiatives that can help reduce emissions and support the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. Ragn-Sells had already been invited to contribute its expertise during the UNFCCC Climate Week 2025 in Addis Ababa under the session:
How to finance mitigation activities and how circular transformations will enable to fulfil the ambitions set in the Paris agreement | UNFCCC

“The fact that our work is being highlighted in this context shows that circular solutions are gaining an increasingly prominent place in the international climate discussion. It is also recognition that resource issues need to be an integral part of climate action,” says Pär Larshans, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ragn-Sells.

The global dialogue in Sydney was organized as part of the United Nations' efforts to accelerate global emission reductions during this decade. In addition to Ragn-Sells’ contribution, the event highlighted Sweden’s engagement in LeadIT and the country’s work to implement national climate plans.

Ragn-Sells’ contribution is based on the Climate Solutions Framework, a methodology developed by, among others, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative to identify solutions that can replace more emission-intensive alternatives. One of its core principles is that a solution must demonstrate a carbon footprint at least 50% lower than a relevant market benchmark. In the case of Ragn-Sells, the focus is on the amount of avoided CO2e emissions these solutions can generate.

The circular climate solutions presented by Ragn-Sells included the recycling of solvents, nutrients from aquaculture, flat glass, and the recovery of valuable resources from industrial residual streams.

The exhibition focused on demonstrating the potential of solutions that contribute to avoided emissions and how they can help achieve global climate goals. By recycling materials, replacing virgin raw materials, and developing new circular business models, emissions can be reduced far beyond a company’s own operations.

“The climate debate often focuses on companies’ own emissions. That is important, but we also need to make visible the emissions that can be avoided when circular solutions replace linear systems. We must recycle the resources we already have as many times as possible if we truly aim to build a sustainable society,” says Madeleine Ljunggren, CEO of Ragn-Sells Group.

The UNFCCC meeting in Sydney serves as a lead-up to COP31, the UN Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9-20 November this year. Ragn-Sells will participate as part of the Estonian delegation, with a focus on continuing to advance the discussion on how circular solutions can contribute to achieving the UN’s climate goals.

“If we are serious about delivering on the Paris Agreement, the energy transition must be complemented by a resource transition. We need to reduce the demand for new raw materials by making better use of the resources already available in society. Only when these perspectives are combined can we achieve the level of emissions reductions required,” says Pär Larshans.
