At the UNFCCC Climate Week (CW2) in Addis Ababa, Ragn-Sells’ Sustainability Director, Pär Larshans, delivered a keynote speech on how circular transformation can help achieve the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. The presentation showcased five scalable circular processes, three of which are within the global food value chain, offering significant potential for resource efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

“If we are serious about building a sustainable society, one that will help humanity stay within planetary boundaries, we must use the resources we already have over and over again. This is why Ragn-Sells is committed to developing circular alternatives and solutions that enable the production of high-quality raw materials, while avoiding waste that ends up in the wrong places,” says Pär Larshans.

During the session, Larshans emphasised the global CO2e savings potential of these innovations, which include advanced nutrient recovery, and the reduction of CH4 and N2O emissions. He also included the potential with solvent recycling and carbon-storing material production. These solutions address critical challenges, such as phosphorus scarcity, nitrogen emissions, and waste valorisation, while enabling a shift from a linear to a circular economy.

"I am happy that the potential with a circular transformation now is a natural part as a mitigation activity in the climate talks. But it is important to state that real circular solutions should replace virgin sourced raw materials, detoxify the material flow and don't push any hindrances to future generations.”

The event also served as a platform for Ragn-Sells to extend an invitation to a roundtable discussion at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, on 15 November, focusing on collaboration across the food value chain. In this area, Ragn-Sells is collaborating with partners, including IKEA, Tetra Pak, and Alfa Laval, in initiatives that reflect the belief that real change occurs when industries work together across value chains.

CW2 is part of the UNFCCC’s Climate Week series, in advance of COP30 in Brazil, which convenes regional and global actors to tackle real-world implementation challenges and identify scalable solutions and how to finance them.
